If you see a dash light come on that reads GEN or ALT or is in the shape of a little battery, then alternator trouble could be brewing. Whenever a warning light illuminates, it’s important to figure out what exactly is triggering it. If you delay, the issue could soon worsen and cause bigger problems. 

A dead battery is also a common sign of alternator failure. Car batteries should work reliably for three to five years, if not longer. But if your battery dies before this timeframe, then you may be dealing with an alternator issue (assuming your battery isn’t dead because you left your lights on!). 

A bad alternator can also cause electrical accessory problems. Modern automobiles regularly have computers that can calculate which electrical accessories should have their power supply diminished when an alternator problem is detected. This conserves power for the vehicle’s most crucial electrical functions. However, it can lead to issues with accessories like power seats and the radio. A malfunctioning alternator can also cause headlights to start dimming or flickering, which can create a serious safety hazard if you need to drive at night on poorly illuminated roads. Alternator failure can also put you in a dangerous situation if you stall out in traffic because not enough power is being sent to spark plugs.
